Wood floors come in a variety of species. Each provides a look that is unique to itself with its own color and physical characteristics. Some species are light, like maple, some are medium, like oak, and some are dark, like walnut. Each species also possesses natural characteristics that are inherent to its' appearance, like knot holes, mineral streaks or grain variations.

All wood floors require finish. This is a protective coat that seals the floor against every day wear.
With unfinished wood flooring, your installer will sand the wood and apply the finish on the job site. There are several finish options available. This is the best option if you are looking for a specific color or need to match existing flooring. With factory-finished wood flooring, the finish is applied at the manufacturer facility. These floors require less time to install because the sanding and finishing process has already happened. The floors are ready to walk on immediately following the installation.Talk to your installer or retailer about which option best suits your lifestyle and needs. Solid and Engineered Wood Flooring Solid wood flooring is a solid piece of wood from top to bottom. The thickness varies from ¾” to 5/16”. Solid wood flooring can be installed above or on grade, and can be sanded and refinished several times during its service life. Engineered wood floors are real wood floors made using multiple wood or wood composite veneers. The veneers can be the same or different species. The grain of each veneer runs in different directions, which increases its stability. This means the wood will resist expanding and contracting during fluctuations in humidity and temperature. This type of flooring sometimes can be sanded and refinished, depending on the thickness of its top layer. Engineered wood flooring can be installed above, on or below grade.
